FAQ’s Some frequently asked questions…

  1. How do I apply for the residency program?

    Refer to “The Residency” page for a complete list of requirements. In a nutshell, you contact us for availability, then submit the following when you apply: (1) Artist CV (2) Statement of intent (3) Images of your work. We will review your application and then get back to you with news of whether or not you’ve been accepted. Once you are accepted, you need to respond quickly with 2 preferred dates and then when your date has been confirmed, you must send a deposit for 50% of the residency fee.

  2. If I apply, will I be accepted?

    Not necessarily. We only accept artist that prove that they are committed, full-time artists. We also can’t accommodate everyone due to space limitations.

  3. What is the cost of the residency program?

    The residency fee is $CAD 750 per week between April and September, this fee allows you to bring a friend for free if they share your accommodations and studio. The residency fee is lower during the winter months (depending on length of stay).

  4. If I am accepted, is there a schedule for me?

    No, the residency is a self-directed program that is open to artists at any stage of their career, from emerging to established. Artists are expected to manage their own time and demonstrate a commitment to their art.

  5. Are there any age restrictions for applying to the Hammer and Sky Artist Residency program?

    Yes, artists and companions must be at least 21 yrs old.

  6. Is there Internet?

    Yes, Internet is available in all spaces except the private studios.

  7. What is the duration of the residency program?

    Two weeks, from Sunday 3 pm to Saturday 11 am.

  8. What is the deadline for submitting an application?

    We start to take applications by January 15 for the upcoming year. Reminder: Apply early to secure the best spots.

  9. How many artists can the residency accommodate at one time?

    Three to five artists + companions. There are three residency units available in every two week block, each unit can accommodate one artist and one companion.

  10. Can I bring a partner or friend?

    Yes, your fee is for one room with 2 beds. The person you bring will share your room and if they are an artist, they also share your studio.

  11. Do the sleeping quarters have lockable rooms with private bathrooms?

    Yes all 3 units can be locked and have full private bathrooms.

  12. Are any accommodations shared?

    Yes, the Buckman House is a 2 bedroom house with eat-in kitchen, living room, lockable rooms and full private bathrooms. See the Residency page for more details.

  13. Are pets allowed?

    No.

  14. What types of artistic disciplines are accepted for the residency program?

    Based on our experience, the residency is well equipped for sculptors, visual artists, writers and musicians. If your discipline is outside of these domains, contact us to see if we can accommodate you.

  15. What kind of workspace is provided to the artists during the residency?

    There are 3 private studios on the church property and the church is a common space that can be used for meeting, studio, performance or chilling space. The church has a printing press and a performance stage with a PA system.

  16. Can anyone use the printing press?

    No, artists must have experience in print making to use the printing press and must supply their own materials.

  17. Are there any Fellowships/ subsidies available?

    Yes, Hammer and Sky currently offers one Fellowship that covers the residency cost and pays a stipend at the end of the stay. The winner of the Fellowship is announced in May. See the Fellowship page for details.

  18. Is there any support provided for visa or travel arrangements for international artists?

    No, you are responsible for all your travel arrangements.

  19. Is there a requirement for the artists to exhibit their work during or after the residency program?

    No, but we encourage interaction with the public. When the residents are in agreement, we can arrange pop-up art shows and invite the public.

  20. Can international artists apply for the Hammer and Sky Artist Residency program?

    Yes, the residency is open to applications from all over.

  21. How do you decide who gets accepted?

    All applications are reviewed and we look for a high level of dedication and commitment to your work.

  22. What activities can I do in my spare time?

    Brier Island is known for its great whale watching and bird watching (bring binoculars). It also has good hiking, bicycling, beach-combing, fishing and beautiful scenery.

  23. What’s the weather like on Brier Island?

    Expect variable maritime weather, that means any given day in the summer can have a broad mix of weather so plan to dress for lots of different weather. It’s always a good idea to bring a pair of rubber boots. The island is always cooler than the mainland by about 7 degrees in the summer and the winter usually varies between -5C and +5C. The nicest months are usually July, August and September.

  24. Where can I buy food?

    The local general stores are well stocked with basic groceries and limited fresh vegetables. If you need to do a more comprehensive shopping, you could go to Digby where there are all the big stores (Walmart, Dollarama, Canadian Tire, Home Hardware).

  25. Are there restaurants nearby?

    Yes, in Westport, there is a pub (Chetwicks, $$) next to the general store and a fancier restaurant (Grandview, $$$) at the Brier Island Lodge.

  26. Where can I buy wine/beer/ spirits?

    At the general store in Westport.How much are the two ferries to get to Brier Island?

    The ferries are free.

  27. Where can I get gas?

    The general store in Westport has a gas station (regular gas only) and there is also a gas station in Tiverton.

  28. Can I charge my electric car nearby?

    Yes. In Digby, there is a TESLA Charging station at the Canadian Tire. We also have a 220V exterior outlet on our garage at the residency, To hook up, you will need and adapter for a stove plug (most electric vehicles come with this accessory).
